Clarifying your why and using it to guide communications
Hosted by AFP-NYC's Fundraising Day in New York

Every strong nonprofit story starts with a clear “why.” When your organization’s positioning and purpose are well-defined—and consistently expressed—they become the foundation for meaningful communications, effective fundraising, and a more connected team.
Join Farra Trompeter, co-director, Raine Martin, Chief External Relations & Advancement Officer at Brooklyn Community Services, and David Rios, Director, Young Learners, Learning and Engagement at Museum of Modern Art, for an interactive session to explore how clarifying your “why” can strengthen your brand, shape your messaging, inform donor communications, and guide strategic decisions.
You’ll hear real-world examples of how Big Duck and Brooklyn Community Services worked together to define their brand strategy and update their vision, mission, and values through a process that engaged their staff and board. You’ll also learn about Big Duck and MoMA’s work creating guiding statements for The Museum of Modern Art’s Learning & Engagement Department based on insights from the Young Learners team.
Together, we’ll discuss practical tools and frameworks you can use to define, articulate, and activate your organization’s “why” so it resonates across all your communications.
You’ll leave with ideas and inspiration to help your nonprofit speak with intentional personality, greater clarity, and tools for consistency.
